Remember Shrinky Dink? It is a shrinkable plastic that can be colored, stamped, or cut out. Once baked in an oven, the full-size image magically shrinks to a smaller (approx 1/3) hard plastic plate. The neat thing is that the original shape or color is not altered.
I recently purchased a package of Shrinky Dinks for a special project I wanted to create (yellow rose charms to give to my Beta Sigma Phi sisters). I haven’t had the time to create these just yet, but will post photos as soon as I do!
In the meantime, the idea to use the square lattice die to create a necklace came from Barb Mullikin at BarbStamps. Barb’s idea was perfect timing for Mother’s Day! I usually give my stepmother Corlene a piece of jewelry (usually a necklace or pin) for her birthday, Christmas, and Mother’s Day. I am always on the lookout for interesting and funky pieces of jewelry at antique stores, craft fairs, or art shows. When I saw Barb’s idea, I thought perfect! This is something I could easily make for Corlene this year.
I cut out the lattice design using my Big Shot and Square Lattice Die out of frosted “Ruff n’ Ready” Shrinky Dink.
I then colored the piece using my Basic Black dye ink pad.
I baked it according to the package directions. It is so much fun to watch the item curl up and shrink, then lay flat again in the oven. This photo gives you an idea of how much the original shrinks.
After I removed it from the oven and let it cool, I added the small rhinestones, a jump ring, and a silver chain I purchased at a discount store. I think it came out pretty. I hope Corlene will like it! Thanks again Barb for such great inspiration!
