This week’s challenge over at Less is More is “Sewing.” I have said it many times that I love working with fabric, but don’t enjoy sewing. I have a sewing machine, but it rarely gets used. (see below for my mouse in my sewing machine story that I kid you not, happened today as I was working on this challenge!) Anyway, I have discovered the faux quilting technique using paper instead of fabric. I have also found a great quilting pattern website called equiltblocks.com. The patterns here are meant for regular quilting with fabric, but are easy to reduce to work on a smaller scale with paper.

This quilting pattern is called The Crayon Box.
It was simple to reduce to a smaller size. For a 3 x 3 quilting square, you need
4 pieces measuring 1 1/2 x 1/2
6 pieces measuring 1 x 1/2
2 pieces measuring 2 x 1 /2
and 1- 1 x 1 square
After piecing the quilt block together, run it through a die cut machine with an embossing folder to create the faux stitching. Click here to view more faux quilting projects.
Now for my mouse in my sewing machine story. In my crafting room, I have a small cat bed on the floor that one of our cats, Sweet Pea, sleeps in during the day. She likes to be in the craft room with me even though she is curled up asleep most of the day. My portable sewing machine sits in its case on the floor near her bed. Today, as I was cutting paper for this project, she was pawing at and moving her bed around and out of the way. Then, she stared and pawed around the sewing machine case. I instantly knew something was up. I picked up the sewing machine, but didn’t see anything scurry or move away from it. I carefully lifted off the lid as she watched intently, but there was nothing out of the ordinary there. She continued to be fixated on the machine so I thought I better take it outside and have a closer look. Sure enough, when I lifted the sewing machine up to see the bottom, there was a fuzzy body in between the storage drawer that slides out and the bottom of the machine! So, I called my husband! He took the machine further out into the yard and slide the drawer open. Out ran a mouse! Whew! Don’t know how he got into the house and into the craft room, but I bet it won’t return with Sweet Pea and 2 other cats in the house. One of the many small critter adventures we have had since living in our small house located in a big forest!
