I created this shadow box for a specific Splitcoaststampers Creative Crew challenge. I wanted to keep it fairly simple with only 2 compartments and using black and white with a pop of red. More embellishments could have been added, but again, I wanted to keep it simple.
Here’s how to create your own paper shadow box!
You can make any size of shadow box and add as many inserts and compartments as you’d like. The basic scoring measurements remain the same.
For the final shadow box, I started with a 12″x9″ piece of Basic Black textured card stock. It’s finished size is 8″x 5″. The inside compartment (without dividers) measures 7″x 4″. I used a sheet of 12″x9″ Whisper White card stock for the instructions.
Score every 1/2″ on all 4 sides: 1/2″, 1″, 1 1/2″ and 2 “.
On 2 sides, score at 2 1/2″ and 9 1/2″ to the last or 2″ score line.
Cut out the 4 corners as shown below, leaving a tab on each side. You will remove the 12 squares on the end, leave the middle 4, and remove the inside 4.
Apply Sticky Strip to each of the tabs.
Fold all the score lines in towards the center. Use a bone folder to get crisp score lines.
Apply Sticky Strip to the each side on what will be the inside roll.
Peel off the red backing on the Sticky Strip and roll each side towards the center creating the frame of your shadow box. Apply a little pressure to make sure the Sticky Strip holds each side of the frame in place.
Peel off the red backing on the Sticky Strip on the 4 tabs. Fold them in to help square the box and finish off the look of the sides of the frame.
Now, you are ready to create the inside compartments of the shadow box. You can have as many compartments and configure them any way you’d like.
I would suggest creating and attaching the inserts first, before adding the compartment dividers. You can insert them into the box and use the dividers to hide any seams.
This box was created for a specific Splitcoaststampers Creative Crew challenge. In the challenge, we were to use sets from the Fan Fair Product Suite found in the main catalog (pages 106-107). I chose to use the sets Elements of Style and Postage Due. For the Elements of Style compartment, I simply stamped the image on a piece of 3 1/4 x 3 3/4″ white card stock using Black Stazon.
The Postage Due compartment was made using the My Digital Studio download. I simply resized it in MDS and printed the image out on white card stock. I also sized and printed out the 2 postage stamp images on white card stock. I then punched them out using my Postage Stamp punch and layered them over Cherry Cobbler for a pop of color.
Both pieces were attached to the inside of the box using SNAIL adhesive.
Then, it was time to create the compartment divider.
For this shadow box, I started with a scrap of black textured card stock(left over from the original cut and white for the instructions) measuring 4 1/4″ x 2 1/2″.
Score it at 1/2″, 1, 1 1/2″ and 2″.
Fold along the score lines using the bone folder to get crisp score lines.
Apply a piece of Sticky Strip to the inside roll. I apologize that this photo is so blurry. My camera was having trouble focusing white card stock on white background!
I knew I only wanted 2 compartments and the inside height measurement of the box is 4″. Once the piece was scored and rolled, I double-checked the
fit and trimmed it down to 4″ before the final Sticky Strip assembly.
Peel off the red backing on the Sticky Strip and roll the piece forming the compartment divider. Apply another piece of Sticky Strip to the bottom. Peel off the red backing and insert into the box.
For the handle at the top, I cut a scrap of black textured card stock (again left over from the original cut) 1/2″ x 7″ and slightly curved the ends. I then attached it to the top using Mini Glue Dots.
For a shadow box measuring 8″x8″ (inside measurements without dividers 7″x7″),start with a 12″x 12″ piece of card stock. Use the same scoring measurements. The length of your dividers will change depending on how you want to configure the compartments.
