The swap theme for our March Stamp Club is anything but a card. I always look forward to this theme as I know the Stamp Club members will come up with some really great ideas.
Since I’ve been on a Shaving Cream Technique kick the last couple of weeks as I prepped for an upcoming class for the Ladies of Wetmore, I thought I’d try something slightly different by doing the technique on fabric using fabric paints. My original idea was to give shaving cream dyed dish towels as my contribution to the swap. I purchased some flour sack dish towels at my local ***mart and gave the technique a try.
Although it worked, and my first try came out great (see photo), I decided it was a little too cumbersome to do simply because of the size of the towels.
So, I decided to go with Plan B and scale the project down somewhat by making shaving cream fabric coasters!
They were simple to do although it did require a little bit of sewing to put them together. Honestly, getting out my sewing machine and making sure I had enough thread in the bobbin was the most difficult part of the whole project!
I started by cutting pairs of squares of white muslin fabric. I made my mix by swirling yellow, purple, blue and green fabric paints into the shaving cream. I set the squares into the mix one at a time, letting them set for a few seconds. Once the square were removed, I scraped off the shaving cream which left pretty swirls of color.
Once the fabric was dry, I sandwiched a piece of natural cotton batting between two squares and cut them out using my Big Shot and Bigz Scallop Square die. Then, I simply stitched them together. I then cut out butterflies from scrap pieces of fabric again using my Big Shot and Bigz Beautiful Butterflies die and attached them to the front of the coaster using “Tacky Glue”. I had the butterfly buttons in my crafting stash, and I simply glued them to the fabric butterfly using “Tacky Glue.”
The buttons do create a little bump in the coaster. As long as a glass with an indented bottom is placed on it, there isn’t a problem. My husband did point out that his beer pint glasses aren’t indented so these coasters will not work for them. I told him that I didn’t think any of the ladies would be using them for their beer glasses. And if they did, I’d give them a heads up!
For the tea towel, I followed the directions on the bottles of fabric paint for drying, setting and washing: let dry for 72 hours before washing. It washed and dried fine without any of the paint washing out.
