Daily Life Inspiration-Dragonfly Garden Card

Dragonfly Garden

Dragonfly Garden from Stampin’ Up!

Inspiration for my card making often comes from my surroundings here in the mountains of Southern Colorado.

We recently visited a neighbor’s pond with our grandchildren to net and release salamanders.

What a great learning experience for the kids who were able to hold and touch salamanders before we released them back into the water.

The pond was teeming with life: water bugs and spiders, water snakes, and lots and lots of dragonflies.

Having my camera ready, I snapped this photo of one of the many dragonflies:

After processing the photo, I immediately thought that it would easily translate into a card using the stamp set Dragonfly Garden from Stampin’ Up!

I knew that I could easily replicate the colors and texture of the pond background by using the acrylic-block watercolor technique, along with using the leaves image found in the stamp set Very Versailles.

The acrylic block watercolor technique is one of my favorites, and is often my go-to technique when I want to create landscape or abstract backgrounds.

You can see more of my creations using this technique Here.

Here’s How:

  1. To create the clear-block watercolor background, simply dab or pat color directly from the ink pad onto a clear acrylic block.  For this card, I used Sahara Sand, Old Olive, and Pool Party.  Then, spritz the block with water so the ink begins to run and pool.  Lay the block on a piece of watercolor paper, and let it sit for a few seconds.  Lift the block and set the paper aside to dry.
  2. Stamp leaf image from Very Versailles using Mossy Meadow ink.  If needed, mask the edges so the images don’t extend past the background.
  3. Stamp dragonfly from Dragonfly Garden on a scrap piece of Basic White card stock using Early Espresso ink.  Over stamp the wings using Pacific Point ink.  With a Blender Pen, add Pacific Point ink to the body of the dragonfly.
  4. Punch out using the coordinating Dragonflies Punch.
  5. Stamp greeting from Very Versailles on the card front using Pacific Point ink.
  6. Attach card front to Old Olive mat.  Attach to Sahara Sand card base.
  7. Add dragonfly using Mini Dimensionals to pop it up.  Attach 2021-2023 In Color Jewel to complete.

I hope this card has provided inspiration for your card making.

Look around your setting, and let the beauty inspire you!

I’d love to see your creations.
