Aluminum Can Crafting-Alaskan Amber

Aluminum Can Crafting

Recycle and Reuse!

I’ve shared many cards I have created using beer or soda aluminum cans over the years.

My husband drinks craft beers, and I’m always confiscating the cans afterward.

I cut the cans down and use the fun and colorful labels to create cards.

It’s good to recycle and reuse, plus they make great masculine-themed cards!

You can see some of the cards, HERE-including a video tutorial on how to cut down the cans for use in card making

I used this can of Alaskan Amber

To create this card

I was immediately struck by the colors and the image of the ship on the can!
Isn’t it perfect for creating a masculine-themed card?

Here’s How:

  1. With a pair of tin snips or heavy crafting scissors cut a slit from the opening of the can down to the top ridge.  I usually use a pair of craft scissors from Stampin’ Up!  This pair of scissors has cut hundreds of aluminum cans over the years, and they are still going strong.  But, the rim of this can is a little thicker than most, so I used a pair of tin snips.
  2. With a pair of heavy crafting scissors, cut along the top ridge of the can and remove the top. **Be careful; the cut aluminum will be sharp!
  3. Cut down the side of the can.  I usually cut down the side that has the brand and nutritional information.
  4. Cut along the bottom ridge of the can and remove the bottom.
  5. Discard the excess pieces and flatten what is left of the can.  Trim to the size needed for your project.
  6. Cut a piece of Basic Black card stock slightly larger than the card front.  Swipe an Embossing Buddy over the bottom of the card stock, and stamp a greeting using Versamark.  I used one of my favorite stamps from Flora and Fauna. Sprinkle silver embossing powder over the greeting and heat emboss using a heat tool.
  7. Because the aluminum will have a slight bow, I find it best to adhere it to card stock matting using brads.  Regular adhesive tends not to stick after a while as the card begins to bend. I temporarily attached the can to the Basic Black mat using Stampin’ Seal, and then I used my Crop-a-dile to punch the holes for the brads. I  inserted silver brads through the holes, opening the wings on the back.
  8.  Attach the card front to the Poppy Parade card base to complete.
