Folded Book Art
for our Granddaughter’s 8th birthday!
This past summer, I attended a Folded Book Art class presented by Diane Dudley at the West Custer County Library in Westcliffe, CO.
The featured project was creating a folded heart inside a book.
All the needed supplies and instructions were supplied including our choice of old books.
I chose a small red and gold-covered book titled,
The Best of the World’s Classics, Great Britain and Ireland-IV, 1801-1909, copyrighted in 1909.
What a pretty little book measuring just 6″x 4″.
I must say, book folding is not difficult, but you must follow a pattern and pay close attention to that pattern.
When done, I had created this pretty heart inside the book.
I instantly knew who I would give this little treasure to!
Our Granddaughter, who is turning 8 and is beginning her journey into the love of reading!
For the cover, I made a closure piece cut and scored out of gold foil paper.
I attached it on the back using adhesive, then added a velcro button to the front of the book, matching up the coordinating velcro button on the inside of the closure.
I die-cut a “M” for her first name using a retired alphabet die set out of gold foil paper.
Rhinestone pieces were added to the front using a spot of hot glue.
The inside of the back cover has this really cool library sleeve attached.
You know, the ones all library books used to have as a way to check out a book?
This was long before library books had labels with bar codes for checking them out using a computer and scanner.
I will write our birthday greeting on this card!
And finally, the inside of the front cover had pencil marks on it that I could not fully erase.
So, I used a page from the old dictionary that my Great Grandmother gave me when I was 8 or 9. The spine of the dictionary split years ago, and since then, I’ve used it in my crafting.
I cut down the page that had the definition of “birthday”, matted it to a piece of black card stock and attached to the inside to cover up the pencil marks.
