90 Candles, One Fold-Out Birthday Card

I made this fold-out card for my Mom’s 90th birthday, and it might be my favorite milestone card yet!
It’s a fun way to celebrate those big birthdays—the ones that end in a zero and definitely deserve extra candles.
Fair warning: your recipient will count the candles to be sure you didn’t miss one! 😉
Best of all, it’s a clever way to use up paper scraps while creating a card that’s guaranteed to make people smile.
I’ve been saving narrow strips of card stock and designer paper all year in anticipation of making this special card for her 90th birthday.
Long pieces, short pieces—nothing went to waste. Here’s a look at the pile of saved scraps and the card as it came together.

This is the card I made in 2024 for my Dad’s 90th birthday!
90 Candles, One Fold-Out Birthday Card How-to:
Paper measurements:
-4 1/4″ x 11″, card base scored at 5 1/4″ ” and 10 1/2″. Secure 10 candles on each piece. One card base will hold 20 candles.
-fold at the score lines. The 1/2″ piece is glued to the next 4 1/4″ x 11″ piece. Add as many card bases as needed for the number of candles you want to have.
-cut strips of card stock and designer papers 1/4″-1/”2 wide and 2 3/4″-3 1/4″ long.
-apply strips to card bases, 10 candles to a side. Be sure to mix up the colors and lengths.
-stamp or punch a candle flame above each candle. I used the flame image from the retired Build a Birthday stamp set. You could also use the “wing” from the retired Build a Bird punch.
-decorate the front of the card as desired. I used a piece of retired designer paper for the front matted to a piece of Basic Black card stock and paired it with a greeting die-cut out of Basic Black card stock using the retired Happy Birthday die.
-decorate the end inside panel of the card as desired. I used Build a Birthday, stamping each part of the cake and stand in Coastal Cabana, Melon Mambo Crushed Curry, and Flirty Flamingo inks. And I added a colored-variety of as embellishments to complete.
