Glimmer Birthday Cake Card

Glimmer Birthday Cake Card

with “vanilla” frosting!

For my husband, on his 75th birthday!

I’m always looking for unique birthday card ideas for my husband.

I thought about creating a multi-candle, fold-out card with 75 candles, but he’s already seen them as I’ve created several for family members and friends.

So…

The search began for something different.  I found this idea on Pinterest.

Perfect!

I wasn’t sure how I would put this card together and had to think through the steps before starting.

Let me see if I can convey the how-to in a way that’s easy to understand!

I did use some retired items: Ombre Glimmer Paper, Zany Zoo stamp set, Triangle Die, 1″, 1 1/4″ circle, and Build a Bird punches.

Glimmer Birthday Cake Card How-To:

1.For the cake, I cut strips of Ombre Glimmer paper that I have in my stash.  Six strips cut 1/2″ by 3″.

2. Secure the strips on a piece of card stock measuring 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″.

3. Add the frosting to the side and top of the cake using Embossing Paste:

-I thought it would be easier to add the frosting on a slightly larger piece of card stock (Basic White).  This would allow me room to add the frosting on the top and sides.  Then, I would be able to cut it down to the size needed for the final project.

-Place the cake towards the left and upper edge of the card stock.  Then, determine how wide of a strip of frosting you would like by moving the cake to the right or to the left from the side edge and up or down from the top edge.

-Using a ruler, draw a line with a pencil along the left edge of the cake.  Use this pencil line as your marker so you know where to stop adding the Embossing Paste.

-To help me with this, I placed the long edge of the clear block “H” along the pencil mark.  Then with a palette knife, I added the embossing paste to the left of the block to the edge of the card stock.  I removed the block after a few seconds so the paste wouldn’t dry around it.*

-Now for the top of the cake which is a sloped-triangle shape.  To help me with the shape, I die-cut a template out of scrap card stock using one of my triangle dies.

-I placed the triangle behind the cake, moving it so I had the correct slope, then securing the triangle to my work surface so it wouldn’t shift.

-I used the long edge of the “H” block again as my guide, placing it on the edge of the pencil mark.  Then, I added embossing paste up to the top of the card stock.  Again, I removed the block and cleaned it.

-Set the piece aside so the embossing paste dries.

To finish the card:

1.Once the embossing paste has dried, attach the cake to the piece, lining it up with the frosting on the side and top.  Cut the remainder of the piece down to fit the size of the cake.

2. Add 1/4″ wide strips of Basic White card stock over the glimmer paper to add layers of frosting. You could also build the frosting into the cake piece by leaving a space in between the strips of glimmer paper.  Either way would work!

3. Emboss a piece of Crumb Cake card stock using the Metal Plate Embossing Folder and attach it to a Blackberry Bliss card base.

4.Add the cake to the card front using Foam Adhesive Strips to pop it up.

5. Slip a strip of paper behind the cake for the candle using a Foam Adhesive Strip.  I used a scrap piece of Silver Foil paper that had been embossed and colored using a Stampin’ Blend. Punch the candle using the “wing” from the Build a Bird Punch out of Crushed Curry card stock.  Add it to the card front using a Mini Dimensional.

6.Stamp greeting from Zany Zoo on a piece of Crumb Cake card stock using Blackberry Bliss ink.  Punch using a 1″ circle punch.  Attach to 1 1/4″ Blackberry Bliss circle.  Attach to card front using a Mini Dimensional.

*Be sure to clean any tools (blocks, ruler, silicone craft mat, palette knife, etc) as soon as you can before the paste dries.  It’ll be hard to remove once it has dried.

Done!
