Faux Quilt Card Technique
If you have a pile of paper scraps tucked away, you’re in for a treat! Faux quilt cards are one of my favorite ways to turn even the tiniest leftovers into beautiful, handcrafted cards. I may not be a traditional quilter, but as a card maker, I love mimicking the warmth and detail of fabric quilts—using colorful papers, a bit of dimension, and plenty of creativity. Making a faux quilt card is relaxing, budget-friendly, and doesn’t require a sewing machine or fancy gadgets. If you’d like more project ideas, you can always visit my here for more inspiration.
Faux Quilt Card for Beginners
This simple project uses patterned paper and an embossing folder to create a stitched, quilt-like look. The best part? No piece is too small to use. Here’s how I made my “Sunrise on the Mountain” faux quilt card, inspired by a beautiful mountain landscape quilt pattern I found on the Easy Quilt Patterns Facebook page.
Supplies Used:
- Stamp Set: Sunshine Vibes
- Ink: Blackberry Bliss
- Paper: Daffodil Delight, Blackberry Bliss, Boho Vibes, Beautiful Bokeh, Perennial Lavender, Blooming Impressions, purple glimmer Designer Series Papers
- Accessories: Stampin’ Cut & Emboss Machine, Basic Borders Dies, Softly Sophisticated Embossing Folder, 1 1/4″ and 1 3/8″ Circle Punches, Muted Palette Dots
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Die-Cut or Tear the Pieces: Cut or tear various patterns of designer paper to represent different elements of your landscape (mountains, sunrise, sky, etc.). For my card, I sized the front to 5″ x 3-3/4″ and used the Basic Borders dies. Don’t have dies? Hand-tearing works for a rustic vibe.
- Layer & Build: Working from top to bottom, layer your patterned paper pieces on the card front to build the landscape.
- Emboss for Texture: Use your die-cut machine and an embossing folder (I used Softly Sophisticated) to add the classic quilt “stitch” texture.
- Finish the Card: Attach the quilted panel to a Blackberry Bliss mat, then a Daffodil Delight card base. Stamp your greeting on Daffodil Delight card stock with Blackberry Bliss ink, punch it out, and mount on a circle of Blackberry Bliss. Add Muted Palette Dots for the finishing touch.
Tips: Experiment with color combos and patterns for different seasons—or use holiday paper for a cozy winter quilt feel. The texture and color make each card unique!
