One of our Splitcoaststampers Creative Crew challenges this month was to showcase paper piercing.
I decided to combine paper piercing with cross-stitch embroidery. The
two go hand in hand!

Since I didn’t feel comfortable free-handing the “Mom” cross stitch pattern for this card, I did a quick internet search and found www.bettercrossstitchpatterns.com, a great website that has free cross stitch instructions and patterns. I used the basic cross stitch alphabet patterns found HERE created by Catherine Martin Tripp as my letter patterns.
I simply printed out a sheet of the letters and then cut out the individual letter blocks. The letters print out on a grid, so cutting them the same size for aligning and placement is easy. I then attached them to the Very Vanilla card stock heart piece that I had cut out using the Big Shot and Hearts Collection Framelits (see below for more information). This piece is the inside of my card. I used Dotto temporary adhesive to attach the letters to this piece.
Once the letters were placed where I wanted them, I moved the heart to my Paper Piercing Mat. I pierced holes in the card stock using my Paper Piercing Tool and using the cross stitch pattern as my guide to pierce holes at the top and bottom of the cross stitch “x’s” on each letter.
Once that was done, I removed the pattern pieces and embroidered the
cross-stitch pattern using the Lucky Limeade and Primrose Petals
embroidery floss that comes with the Sweet Threads Simply Sent kit from Stampin’ Up!

To create the cross stitch lines underneath “Mom”, I simply placed the Paper Piercing Template below the letters and pierced four rows of
holes. I then cross-stitched using the pierced holes as my guide.
Notes:
To create the heart card, I started with a piece of Tea for Two Designer Series paper measuring approx 10″ x 6″ and scored in half. I then placed the top of the large scallop heart framelit just above the score line and ran it through the Big Shot. The heart will now open as a card.
I then opened the heart and centered the 3rd largest heart framelit on the front of the
scallop heart. I ran it through the Big Shot cutting
a window in the scallop heart.
To create the inside piece that is to be cross-stitched, I cut a heart out of plain Very Vanilla card stock using the 3rd largest framelit and sponged on some color. It is now ready to be paper pierced and cross-stitched. Notice you will have a heart cutout that can be used for another project.
To create the Island Indigo frames, I simply nested two heart framelits (2nd and 3rd largest) on a piece of Island Indigo card stock and ran through the Big Shot. I made one frame for the heart on the inside and one frame for the heart on the outside of the card. Again, you will have heart cut outs that can be used for another project.
