This is the coolest project ever! When I first read about this technique, I knew I had to try it. But to be honest, I was sure it was going to be one of those projects that sounds really great, but just won’t work. I thought printing on tissue paper would be a disaster, jamming up the printer etc. Well, I am very happy to announce it is really easy and is one of those WOW! projects.
I had a great time going through old family photos and choosing my favorites to put on the tiles. I did 8 tiles, and I am going to send them to my Aunt in Amarillo who is the keeper of our family mementos. She and my uncle have an “Ancestors” room filled with great old photographs and other items. I have sealed and put “feet” on the tiles using fun foam so they can be used as coasters if they want. I am also sending the trinket/plate holders in case they want to set them upright for display
This is a great way to personalize a gift for family and friends. Instructions are below. Have fun and let me know how your project turns out.
Print out photos onto tissue paper and glue/decoupage to ceramic tiles. Here’s what you need:
4×4 tiles (coasters) These can be any kind of tiles: tumbled marble, glazed etc
2×2 tiles (magnets)
mod podge
paint brush or sponge
plain white tissue paper
plain white copy paper
scotch tape
printer
clear sealer
felt feet for coasters or magnets for refrigerator magnets

- Take an original photo, scan into your computer and change to black and white. You can resize it to fit on the tile with a little photo editing.
- Tape a piece of tissue paper to a piece of copy paper. I used a larger sized piece of tissue paper, folded the edges over and taped the two together on the back. Make sure the two pieces of paper are well taped together so you don’t jam your printer.
- Copy photo onto tissue/copy paper.
- Trim photo as needed to fit onto final item.
- Cover the tile with a thin coat of mod podge.
- Gently lay the image down starting in the middle and going out. Be very careful here…the image will tear very easily, so try not to manipulate too much.
- Cover entire image with mod podge carefully and allow to dry.
- For the coaster, once dry, seal with sealant and allow to dry. Add felt or cork feet using permanent adhesive.
- For magnet: Seal with sealant and allow to dry. Add magnet.

Sandra, I sealed the tissue paper photos with Mod Podge. I am not sure if Mod Podge would dry clear enough to use on a bottle. You’d have to read the label to see if it can be used on glass. I don’t have any now or I’d check for you.
Yes, the tissue paper photo would be wonderful on a bottle. You’d just need to make sure you get the right sealant to be used on glass. Let me know what you come up with.
what did you seal the picture with? I have been asked to do a memorial bottle for a young lady whose life was tragically taken I have been pondering on how to apply a photo to the glass on a bottle. I think this might work. what do you think?
