Create shimmery backgrounds by mixing rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol and regular dye based inks along with some shimmer paint in a spray bottle and then spritz the mix onto card stock!
This project came about after a morning of cleaning out my craft studio. I found a collection of small spray bottles filled with isopropyl alcohol and various colors of ink from dye based ink refills. Instead of throwing out the mix, I decided I’d rather create some pretty backgrounds for future use. After a quick test, I found I had bottles with Tempting Turquoise, Wild Wasabi and Wisteria Wonder.
Oh, perfect for creating a background to go with a dragonfly cut out using the Detailed Dragonfly Thinlits die.
Before I started, I decided that I wanted the colors to be a little bolder. The Tempting Turquoise was ok, but the other two needed a refresher. So, I added a few drops of Cucumber Crush ink refill to the Wild Wasabi mix and a few drops of Elegant Eggplant ink refill to the Wisteria Wonder mix. I then spritzed the colors onto a piece of watercolor paper and set them aside to dry. Once dry, I noticed the background had a little bit of shimmer to it. Obviously, one (or more!) of the mixes had a touch of shimmer paint that Stampin’ Up! used to carry. It looks copper in color, but it might have been gold. Who knows for sure 🙂
What a nice surprise!
After the paper was completely dry, I stamped the dot image from the coordinating stamp set Dragonfly Dreams using Dapper Denim ink along the edges and corners. After matting the background to a piece of Dapper Denim card stock, I then cut out a Dapper Denim Dragonfly using my Big Shot and Detailed Dragonfly thinlit die and popped him on the background using Dimensionals. I added some rhinestones that I colored using a purple Sharpie pen for a little extra bit of bling. The greeting from Dragonfly Dreams was stamped onto the Whisper White card base using Dapper Denim ink.
Adding dye based ink to regular isoproply alcohol and spritzing it on regular mat card stock or watercolor paper like I did is a great way to create some interesting backgrounds. I personally like the added texture the watercolor paper brings.
The possibilities are endless!
