Inspired by a Quilt, Reimagined in Paper!
Every so often, a creative spark strikes in the most unexpected places.
Recently, I stumbled across a sweet and whimsical bird quilt pattern on ScrappyGirlsClub’s Facebook page that made me smile.
While traditional quilting isn’t my thing, faux quilt card-making definitely is!
And as soon as I saw it, I knew I had to recreate the design with paper.
The challenge?
Figuring out how to scale it down for a handmade card.
With a little patience and some light math, I resized the quilt blocks to fit a card front.
I chose to go slightly larger than a standard A2 card (this card front measures 6 3/4″ x 5 1/4″) because I wanted to keep the quilt pieces big enough for that adorable bird to really pop.
To make it easier for fellow crafters to try this project, I’ve included the measurements I used directly on the pattern.
I had so much fun choosing patterns and colors to mimic fabric swatches, using a mix of retired designer paper scraps.
It’s the perfect way to breathe new life into your stash!

Inspired by a Quilt, Reimagined in Paper How To:
1. Cut Your Pieces:
Using the pattern as a guide, cut your designer series paper to the specified measurements.

Cut 3/4″ x 3/4″ squares and then slice them diagonally to create small triangles.

Trim the edges of larger pieces as needed to fit the design layout.
2. Build the Bird:

On a Basic White card front, begin arranging the pieces to form the bird shape, using the pattern as your guide.

Cut and add a small triangle for the beak.
3. Emboss for Texture:
Once your layout is complete, run the entire card front through an embossing folder (Cute Crochet) to give it that quilted texture.
4. Assemble the Card:

Add a flower brad for the eye.

Attach the card front to a Night of Navy card base.
5. Add the Sentiment:

Stamp your greeting (Country Birdhouse) in Night of Navy ink on Basic White card stock.

Mount it on a Night of Navy mat, then adhere to the card front.
6. Embellish:
Finish with a few gems for sparkle and personality.
