Mountain Scene Using Masked Landscaping
featuring Aspen Grove stamp set

Creating your own hand-made masks for landscape cards is one of my favorite techniques because it puts you in complete control of the scene and opens the door to endless possibilities.
With something as simple as torn copy paper for masks and blending brushes or sponges for blending color, you can easily build soft layers and natural depth.
For this card, I used this technique to craft a peaceful mountain view framed by a graceful aspen grove.
Masked Landscapes How-To:
-
Tear a strip of copy paper, shaping the top edge into gentle mountain or hill peaks.
-
Place the strip near the top of a piece of Basic White cardstock. Using a Blending Brush or sponge, apply Balmy Blue ink to create the sky. Remove the strip to reveal a soft mountain outline.
-
Move the strip slightly lower, shifting the peaks a bit left or right. Apply Crumb Cake ink.
-
Repeat once more, adding Soft Sea Foam ink for another distant layer.
Create the foreground:
-
Tear another strip of copy paper, keeping this edge more straight. Place it below the last layer and apply Pecan Pie ink.
-
Shift the strip slightly and add Old Olive ink. Adjust again and blend Garden Green ink for depth.
Add the trees:
-
Stamp tree trunks using Early Espresso ink.
-
Stamp again with Crumb Cake ink to suggest depth and distance.
-
Add leaves using Soft Sea Foam and Garden Green inks.
Finish with a greeting from the Heartfelt Hellos (2025 SAB) stamp set.
This technique is easy to customize—change the colors to suit your scene, add blue tones for water, or skip the mountains entirely to create a lake or ocean landscape.
The possibilities are endless!
