Bust Out of the Ordinary with This Fun Birthday Card!

Our granddaughter is turning 10, so I wanted to create an extra-special birthday card to celebrate her big day.
I decided to try the Busted Out technique, a fun and easy way to put those pretty Designer Series Paper scraps to work!
Since blue is our girl’s favorite color, I browsed through my collection of retired Designer Series Paper and found this fabulous swirly blue pattern.
I cut the DSP to 5 1/4″ x 5 1/4″ so the opening would be large enough for the Happy Birthday die-cut I created from blue glimmer paper, making the finished card a generous 6″ x 6″.
I carried the sparkle to the inside by using retired Alphabet Dies to create the big “10” from more blue glimmer paper.

Creating the Busted Out frame is surprisingly simple.
I punched a 1 7/8″ circle from a Post-it note and placed it in the center of the back of the DSP, then used a ruler and pencil to draw lines as guides for cutting the slits with my paper trimmer.
You certainly don’t need to measure or draw guidelines—there’s no right or wrong way to make the cuts—but I appreciated the extra help!
Once I cut the slits, I curled each section toward the front with a pencil (you could also use a bone folder) and secured the tips underneath with Glue Dots.
From there, I decorated a piece of cardstock with my greeting, attached the Busted Out frame over it, and mounted everything onto the card base.
Easy, eye-catching, and endlessly customizable—just change the paper, colors, and sentiment to create a Busted Out card for almost any occasion!
